The map: Palm Beach island vs West Palm Beach

Two different worlds, both with strong pickleball options. The island (Town of Palm Beach) leans private and reservation-based. The mainland (City of West Palm Beach) leans public, drop-in, and noticeably cheaper. Visitors usually mix both depending on where they are staying.

West Palm Beach — public courts

Howard Park Tennis and Pickleball Center

Reopened in 2025 after a full renovation. Four dedicated pickleball courts plus seven clay tennis courts and two hard tennis courts, all with upgraded LED lighting. Run by the City of West Palm Beach Recreation Department. Affordable rates, organized programming, and the most central location in the city.

Phipps Park

The City of West Palm Beach cut the ribbon on the renovated Phipps Park skatepark and pickleball courts on March 25, 2025. The $800,000 project added four new pickleball courts. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $2 for residents and $3 for non-residents. About as affordable as drop-in play gets.

Beyond those two, there are roughly 15 pickleball locations and 77 courts across West Palm Beach, ranging from county parks to HOA facilities open to guests.

Palm Beach island — reservation play

Phipps Ocean Park Racquet Center

Six outdoor clay courts at 2201 S Ocean Blvd. Pickleball is booked through the PlaybyPoint app in 1.5-hour reservation slots. Lights, restrooms, water, and a real tennis-club atmosphere. A one-time fee applies; check the Palm Beach Recreation portal for current rates. Phone: 561-227-6450.

Seaview Park Tennis Center

The Town of Palm Beach's other racquet facility, also run through Palm Beach Recreation with similar membership and day-pass options. Smaller and quieter than Phipps Ocean Park.

Private clubs and country clubs

The major country clubs around Palm Beach and West Palm Beach have added dedicated pickleball over the last three years. Most require member sponsorship; if you are staying at a resort with reciprocal privileges, ask the concierge.

When to visit

November through April is the peak season — warm but not humid, full snowbird crowd, and most leagues running. May and June get warm and start picking up afternoon storms. July through September is hot and quiet, but court availability is excellent and prices on local clinics drop.

What to know before you go

  • Clay courts at Phipps Ocean Park play slower and require different footwork than the hard courts at Howard or Phipps Park. Bring shoes you can slide a little in.
  • PlaybyPoint is the booking app for the Town of Palm Beach facilities. Set it up before you arrive.
  • West Palm Beach drop-in play tends to be friendlier to mixed-skill groups; the island courts skew toward established foursomes.
  • Most courts ban metal-spike or aggressive tread footwear on clay; bring dedicated court shoes if you are playing Phipps Ocean Park.

What to bring

Sun protection (the Atlantic coast sun reflects hard off the courts), water, a hat, and a paddle that handles both clay-style soft games and faster hard-court rallies. The Palm Beach mix of surfaces rewards a versatile, control-leaning paddle over a single-purpose power build.

Bottom line

If you are visiting: Howard Park and Phipps Park on the mainland for drop-in, Phipps Ocean Park on the island for a reservation game on clay. If you live here, the new Phipps Park courts and the renovated Howard Park have changed the city's pickleball landscape — plenty of room to find a regular game year-round. ARTI builds control-leaning paddles that perform well across both clay and hard surfaces, which is what the Palm Beach mix actually demands. Browse paddles.
