Yes, and it's no accident. Pickleball's origin story, as it's usually told, starts with ping-pong paddles and a plastic ball with holes, grabbed when the first players couldn't find enough badminton rackets. So if you grew up with a ping-pong table in the garage, a lot of your game walks straight onto the court: a solid paddle instead of a strung racket, soft touch that wins points, spin that still works, and quick hands up at the net.

What changes is the space around you: a bigger court, an underhand serve, a heavier ball and the two-bounce rule. Below is what carries over, what to relearn, and how to pick a first paddle for you or the whole house. For a ping-pong player, we'd start with ARTI's pop-art Kristen & Kristy carbon fiber paddles.

Our pick: the Kristen & Kristy Good Game paddle. Its raw carbon fiber face suits the soft touch and spin your ping-pong hands already have, and the wink-and-OK-sign art makes it feel like yours from the first rally.

Buying for the whole household instead? Start with a fiberglass Gift Set, which puts two paddles, four balls and a bag in one box. More on that below.

Is Pickleball Like Ping Pong? The Quick Comparison

What feels familiar?

  • A paddle, not a racket. Solid face, no strings. Your hand already knows this shape.
  • Touch. Soft, well-placed shots win a lot of points, the way short pushes do over a ping-pong net.
  • Spin. Topspin, backspin and sidespin all work, with a gentler bite.
  • Quick hands up close. Fast exchanges at the net feel a lot like a close-to-the-table rally.
  • The kitchen as your "table." A no-volley zone next to the net is where the soft, patient game happens.
  • Games to 11. Most games are played to 11, win by 2.

What is different?

  • A bigger court. 20 by 44 feet, instead of a 9-by-5-foot table.
  • An underhand serve, hit diagonally across the court.
  • A plastic ball with holes, bigger and heavier than a ping-pong ball.
  • The two-bounce rule. The serve and the return each have to bounce before anyone hits the ball out of the air.
  • Volleys are allowed. In ping pong, every ball bounces on your side first. In pickleball, you can often hit it in the air.
  • Where you stand. Up at the net beside a partner, not at the end of a table.

What Carries Over From Ping Pong

Here's where your background helps most.

Does my ping-pong touch help in pickleball?

More than anything else. A big part of pickleball is the dink, a soft shot that barely clears the net and drops into the kitchen, the area right in front of it. Think of the short push you use in ping pong to keep an opponent from attacking. Same instinct: keep it low, keep it short, and wait for a ball you can go after. If you play ping pong, you probably already know how to take pace off the ball.

Will my spin work on a pickleball?

Yes, with an adjustment. A ping-pong paddle has soft, tacky rubber that grabs the ball, and a ping-pong ball is feather-light, so spin does wild things. A pickleball paddle has a hard face (usually carbon fiber or fiberglass) and the ball is heavier, so spin has a gentler effect. Topspin still brings the ball down, backspin still keeps it low, and a brushing contact still pays off. Expect less curve than you're used to, and let placement do more of the work.

Are quick hands useful in pickleball?

Very. When all four players are up at the kitchen line, a rally can suddenly speed up into a fast exchange of volleys, everyone only a couple of steps from the net. That's the closest pickleball gets to a hard, close-to-the-table ping-pong rally, and ping-pong reflexes tend to shine here. Keep your paddle up and out in front of you, as you would in a ping-pong ready position.

Is the kitchen like a ping-pong table?

It's a helpful way to picture it. The kitchen (officially the non-volley zone) is the strip that runs 7 feet back from the net on each side. You can't hit the ball out of the air while you're standing in it, so the soft game plays out there: short, low shots that bounce in the kitchen, the way a short game plays out on a table. Picture the two kitchens together as a big, painted-on ping-pong table, and the soft rallies start to make sense.

Does my grip carry over?

If you play shakehand, mostly yes. The usual starting grip in pickleball is a handshake grip, where you hold the paddle as if you're shaking hands with it and use that one grip for forehands and backhands. If you play penhold, the handshake grip is the easiest place to start on a pickleball court.

What Is Different, and What to Relearn

How big is a pickleball court compared to a ping-pong table?

Much bigger. A pickleball court is 20 by 44 feet, the size of a doubles badminton court, with a net just under three feet high in the middle. A ping-pong table is 9 by 5 feet with a 6-inch net. So you'll be moving your feet, not just your arm. The short, quick side-steps you know from ping pong still help, but expect more forward-and-back movement, especially getting from the baseline up to the kitchen.

How do you serve in pickleball?

Underhand, and without the tricks. In ping pong you toss the ball up and the serve bounces on your side first, then theirs, often loaded with spin. In pickleball, the standard serve is hit out of the air, below your waist, with an upward swing. (There's also a drop serve, where you drop the ball and hit it after it bounces.) Either way, the ball has to travel diagonally across the net and land past the kitchen, in the service box diagonally opposite. A deep, steady serve that lands every time is a good serve.

What is the two-bounce rule?

This is the one to remember. After the serve, the receiving side has to let it bounce before hitting it. Then the serving side has to let the return bounce too. After those two bounces, anyone can volley (hit the ball out of the air). It keeps the serving team from rushing the net and slamming everything, and it's why rallies start a little slower than you might expect.

Can you hit the ball before it bounces?

Yes, and this is the biggest mental switch for ping-pong players. In ping pong, every shot bounces on your side before you hit it. In pickleball, once the two-bounce rule is satisfied, you can volley from anywhere except the kitchen. You also can't let your momentum carry you into the kitchen after a volley; that counts as a fault. You can step into the kitchen any time to play a ball that has already bounced there.

Where do you stand in pickleball?

Closer to the net than you think. In ping pong you often back away from the table to give yourself more room. In doubles pickleball, the strong spot is the kitchen line, right at the front edge of the no-volley zone, side by side with your partner. The serving team starts back at the baseline and works its way forward, often with a soft third shot, a "drop" that lands in the kitchen and buys time to move up.

How is a pickleball different from a ping-pong ball?

It's a hard plastic ball with holes, about the size of a baseball and much heavier than a ping-pong ball. It won't dance in the air the way a spinning ping-pong ball does, so your first rallies tend to feel steady.

How does pickleball scoring work?

Familiar at first glance: games usually go to 11, win by 2. The twist is that, in traditional scoring, only the serving side can win a point. If the receiving side wins the rally, they win the serve, not a point. In doubles, the score is called as three numbers (the serving side's score, the receiving side's score, and which partner is serving), and a game starts at 0-0-2. It sounds odd for about ten minutes, and then it clicks.

Your First Pickleball Paddle: What Changes in Your Hand

Start with how you like to win points. If you're the player who loves spin, soft touch and placement, the one who wins with the short game, a carbon fiber face is the natural fit. If the goal is getting the whole household on a court this weekend, go with a set. If you want a deeper, paddle-only comparison, our guide to the best pickleball paddle for former table tennis players goes further.

How is a pickleball paddle different from a ping-pong paddle?

Pick one up for the first time and three things jump out.

  • It's bigger. A longer handle and a wider face.
  • It's a little heavier. A Kristen & Kristy paddle weighs 7.8 to 8.0 oz, more than a ping-pong paddle, so you'll swing more from the shoulder and flick the wrist less.
  • There's no rubber. The face is a hard surface. On ARTI's carbon paddles it's raw carbon fiber; on ARTI Gift Sets it's fiberglass.

Inside, the ARTI paddles in this guide use a honeycomb polymer core, the layer between the two faces. The millimeter number you'll see is its thickness: 16mm on Kristen & Kristy and the Gift Sets, 14mm on the Mastery Elite. Thicker feels softer, and thinner feels a little firmer. For a first paddle, you don't need to overthink it.

Why a raw carbon fiber face for a ping-pong player?

A carbon fiber face is a natural fit for a player who loves spin and touch, and ARTI's carbon paddles use it raw. The Kristen & Kristy line is five pop-art blondes on one build: raw carbon fiber face, 16mm honeycomb polymer core, edgeless (no plastic guard around the rim), 7.8 to 8.0 oz. Only the art changes.

The Good Game face is a wink and an OK sign in an aqua tank top against hot pink. And "good game" is already what you say across the table at the end of a match. Prefer a different face? WOW is the classic pop-art portrait, wide blue eyes and a comic-book speech bubble. Game On has both hands raised to her cheeks, mouth wide open. It's Pickle Time has her on the phone, a blue mobile to her ear. Howdy is the Western one, tipping a brown cowboy hat. Want two for doubles? The K&K Carbon Doubles Duo lets you pick each face at checkout, the same one twice or two different ones.

Who the Good Game paddle is for

  • The ping-pong player who lives for spin, touch and placement
  • Anyone who wants a paddle with real pop-art personality
  • A gift for the table-tennis person in your life who keeps hearing about pickleball

Who might want something else

  • A household that wants everyone playing at once: a fiberglass Gift Set, covered in the next section.
  • A player who wants a thinner core: the Mastery Elite, ARTI's control-forward flagship, a 14mm carbon fiber paddle that is also edgeless.

Playing as a Family: When a Gift Set Makes More Sense

If your family already plays ping pong, you're probably a game household. There's a table in the garage or basement, and everyone has a favorite serve. Pickleball is a natural next step, because doubles lets four people share one court and one game.

That calls for a set, not a single paddle. Every ARTI fiberglass Gift Set comes with two paddles, four ARTI outdoor pickleballs and a carry bag, and it arrives complete in one box, with nothing else to buy and nothing to assemble. The paddles are USA Pickleball approved, so this is a real paddle, not a toy set.

Every set is the same paddle underneath (fiberglass face, 16mm honeycomb polymer core, 7.8 to 8.0 oz), so choose on the artwork. Many sets pair two different designs on one theme:

  • Flowers: pink blossoms on white on one paddle, pale blossoms on mint on the other. Soft pastel florals.
  • Dogs & Giraffes: pups on lilac on one paddle, zebras and giraffes on cream on the other.
  • Dogs: a floppy-eared pup in a red ARTI visor on one paddle, a Doberman in sunglasses on the other, with halftone stars and electric pop-art color.
  • Horizon Duo: two abstract compositions, one in blue and blush, one in orange and grey.
  • Golf Course: cherry blossoms over a quiet fairway on one paddle, golfers out on the course on the other.
  • Dinner & Dessert: steak on one paddle, strawberry cheesecake on the other, in comic-book pop art, with the slogans "Meat Me at the Net" and "Cheesecake Now, Trouble Later."

What if there are four of us?

Court Crew 4 is built from two Gift Sets you pick: four fiberglass paddles, eight outdoor balls and two carry bags, shipped together. Choose two different sets that each pair two designs and you get four different paddles, so everyone can spot their own. Choose the same set twice for two matching pairs. It's made for recreational play: the family court night, the neighbors who finally said yes, the hosts who keep spare paddles for guests.

A First-Game Plan for Ping-Pong Players

  1. Grip it like a handshake. One grip for both sides keeps things simple.
  2. Serve deep and steady. Underhand, diagonal, past the kitchen. Consistency beats cleverness.
  3. Let the first two balls bounce. The serve bounces, the return bounces, then volleys are on.
  4. Get to the kitchen line. Move up with your partner, side by side. Don't camp at the baseline.
  5. Win the soft game. Dink low into the kitchen and wait for a ball that sits up. This is where your ping-pong touch pays off.
  6. Keep your feet out of the kitchen on volleys. That includes the line, and it includes the step after your swing.
  7. Use spin as seasoning. Topspin and backspin still work. Lean on placement first.
  8. Call the score out loud. Three numbers in doubles. It gets easy fast.

Pickleball vs. Ping Pong: FAQ

Is pickleball easier to learn than ping pong?

For getting started, usually yes. The ball is bigger, the serve is underhand, and there is less spin to read, so a new group can keep a friendly rally going quickly. Ping pong packs a lot of spin and speed into a small space; pickleball spreads things out, which makes it friendly for mixed groups.

Can I use a ping-pong paddle to play pickleball?

Not really. A ping-pong paddle is much smaller and made for a far lighter ball. For anything beyond a quick try, use a pickleball paddle.

Are ping-pong players good at pickleball?

They start with a real head start. Soft touch, quick hands and a feel for spin all carry over, and those are the skills that matter most in the soft game at the kitchen line. The adjustments are footwork on a much bigger court, the underhand serve, and learning when to volley instead of letting the ball bounce.

Should a ping-pong player choose carbon fiber or fiberglass?

If it's your own paddle and you love spin and touch, go carbon fiber, such as the Kristen & Kristy Good Game. If you're buying so the whole household can play at once, a fiberglass Gift Set is the easier start: two paddles, four balls and a bag in one box.

Is pickleball scored like ping pong?

Partly. Both usually play to 11, win by 2. But in traditional pickleball scoring, only the serving side scores, and doubles uses a three-number score call.

Can the whole family play pickleball together?

Yes. Doubles puts four people on one court, and rallies are easy to get going. A Gift Set covers two players, and Court Crew 4 covers four.

About ARTI

ARTI Pickleball started in Dallas in 2024 because the founders were tired of paddles that all looked the same. We're real people in Dallas, not a mystery factory, and the art on the paddle face is the point: pop-art portraits, soft florals, pups, dinner and dessert. Our carbon paddles are for the player who wants a paddle all their own, and our Gift Sets are for the household that wants to play together. Hang it, or play it. Find the paddle that finds you.

Bottom line

Yes, pickleball is a lot like ping pong where it counts most, at the net. You use a solid paddle instead of a strung racket, soft touch wins points, spin works, and quick hands help in close-range exchanges at the kitchen line. The kitchen, the non-volley zone that runs 7 feet back from the net on each side, plays a bit like the table. The big differences: the court is 20 by 44 feet instead of a 9-by-5-foot table; you serve underhand and diagonally; the ball is a bigger, heavier plastic ball with holes; the two-bounce rule means the serve and the return must each bounce before anyone volleys; after that, volleys are allowed anywhere except the kitchen, and doubles partners play side by side up at the net instead of standing at the end of a table. Games usually go to 11, win by 2, but in traditional scoring only the serving side scores. For a first paddle, a ping-pong player who loves spin and touch will feel at home with a raw carbon fiber face, such as ARTI's Kristen & Kristy Good Game. A household that wants everyone playing at once should start with an ARTI fiberglass Gift Set, which comes with two paddles, four balls and a carry bag in one box.
